In her work, Astri Stykestad Haukaas works with the tension between distance and proximity to create something that feels familiar, somehow. In this new series, the paintings coalesced as a continuous conversation between the materials and the artist. The works, inspired by a collection of stones on display in her studio and the memories of places in nature that are always present for her, include water from old paintings to start the new ones.
In her own words:
I walk upstream or I go with the flow
Old water in my pocket
Fresh stones in my hand
Old stones in my shoes
Fresh water in my face
